This is an updated post of the struggle between the Public Education Commission (PEC) and the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) over proper supervision of charter schools. The PED is not responding to State auditors’ requests for information following a federal investigation of charters there.
After the first post, a local league in New Mexico suggested that the post be submitted to the Local Viewpoints blog for the NPR affiliate KRWG TV/FM. Meredith updated her post and you can read it here: New Mexico Charter School Power Struggle. With no independent oversight, the State Auditor charged that the PED was ‘at risk’. The State Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) on Charters is proposing that the two agencies be separated again.
