Charter School Bills: Going in Different Directions
It is the best of times; it is the worst of times? SB 1036 and SB SB1038 were filed by Senator Montford of the Senate Education Committee. The bills could make a real improvement in the management and oversight of charters. This has been a major priority of the Florida League of Women Voters.
Then there is Senator Legg’s bill. It has a Trojan horse.

This is a story told by a former data analyst from New York City schools. He provides the data to show the selectivity of the Success Academy schools in Harlem.
It is a compelling story.
North Carolina Voucher Case Hits Supreme Court
Arguments in the Hart et al vs, North Carolina were heard in the North Carolina Supreme Court on February 17th.
This is a straight forward voucher case. The legislature voted to fund $4,200 vouchers for private schools. There is no tax credit dodge here. There is, however, a constitutional requirement that the state raise funds exclusively for a ‘free and uniform public school system’.
The arguments have a familiar ring.
