OPPOSE Constitutional Change for Charter System

Legislation

Legislation

HJR 759 would change the constitution to allow the Department of Education to establish a statewide system for approving charter schools.  Currently, school districts authorize charter schools and the State Board of Education can over rule school board decisions.

The constitution requires a unified system of public schools.  This amendment would lead to separate systems which then are subject to different funding streams and laws.  It takes away control from local school boards.

WE MUST OPPOSE THIS BILL VIGOROUSLY.  IT IS FILED BY MANNY DIAZ FROM MIAMI.

  1. Let me see if I get this straight, Rep Manny Diaz proposal HJR759, is a bill to basically to take away the control from elected school boards. This is an audacious vault toward removing charter authorization from local districts. In 2008 a law to create a state level authorizing agency, the Florida Excellence Commission was ruled unconstitutional.

There is a near urgent need for all local leagues to work in unison with local school boards to maintain authority in the 67 school districts in Florida. In the U.S. public schools belong to school districts, which are governed by school boards.

This could become a referendum at the next voting polls. The Billionaire Boys Club ” reform movement” would spend fortunes to help promote it. A clear path for charters and the privatization of our traditional public schools, all in the name of free market opportunities at the expense of our children.
